Red’s instinct for working is stronger that Gus’s passion for playing. Red was out in the pasture holding the sheep in place when Gus came charging up to him, and tried to do everything possible to distract him – Red is not distractable when he is working. He keeps his eyes right on the sheep at all times, rain or shine, snow or ice.
You can drop a steak in front of him and he won’t respond if he is working. Gus licked his nose, butted heads, crawled on him, barked, challenged him to play, tortured him in every possible way, but Red did not blink or move, and after awhile, even the indefatigable Gus, who usually gets his way, gave up and just sat down next to Red and watched the sheep also.
Red never moved an inch or averted his gaze.
