Our friend Jay Bridge dropped off our new Little Free Library, our weekend project is to paint it and then he will come by with a pole and plant it out front.
It is a wonderful idea, people can stop by (for free) and take a book, and if they can, return a book. I have always hated the idea of so many books dying on shelves, this gives them – especially children who can’t afford hard cover books – to live many more lives.
We have plenty of books to share. The Little Free Library movement was started in 2009 to honor a book lover’s dead mother, and has spread all over the country, it is especially strong in rural areas. We went to the hardware store and chose blue and a soft yellow for our colors. I did the poly on the roof and half of the blue sides, Maria is doing the rest.
It’s a big library house, but we are both very excited about it. You can buy a library or make your own or, if you are like us, hire someone gifted to make one. I see this as grass roots community building and sharing, we hope to have our library up on the front lawn by next weekend.
People say it takes awhile for people to catch on, we are patient. Hope to have the first coat on the roof and sides by this evening.
