Refugees have been arriving in my area, and in Albany, the volunteers working to settle them are asking for help in buying some household supplies that are needed.

They have set up a special Amazon page, any supplies purchased will automatically be sent to the volunteers working for the Albany chapter of the U.S. Committee on  Refugees and Immigrants.

No one has said as much, but I sense a fevered scramble to get as many immigrants here now as quickly as possible. Many fear being barred permanently from the United States. It is said to see such fear about coming to a famed refuge from fear.

The refugee families need basic and inexpensive household supplies.

This year, I am planning to help one or more of these families acclimate to the United States by mentoring them and writing about them.  Maria and I are doing this work together.

I hope to meet the family I will be mentoring shortly and will write about them if they permit it. They all need  the everyday things of life – pots and pans, sheets, teapots and towels,  glasses and eating utensils – the costs range from $8 or $9 to $30.  Many of the refugees lost everything and have little money.

These warehouse items will go to all of the families, not just one.

Many are experiencing their first taste of upstate New York winter weather, and are a bit in shock. They could use some blankets.

This is a personal choice, I have been receiving a few angry and ugly messages about helping these people – they have all been screened and are eager to work – but also much support and encouragement.  Many of these people have waited years to get to America. They will need some help.

This year, I hope to be part of an Army of Good, it is not my wish to argue or polarize anyone further, but to commit small acts of kindness. I want to show up.

As the descendant of immigrants, I believe strongly in the idea of America as a haven, not just for skilled money-makers, but for good people seeking a new start in life, and these people have suffered greatly. We are a dream come true for them, not a nightmare. I hope you can help if you are so inclined. Give me your tired and your poor, as the good lady says.

I know it could have been me needing that teapot or blanket, or any of us. For me, this is what America is all about, this is why I love my country.

Tomorrow, a new President takes office, it is my wish and hope that he is successful, and that he softens his heart and language about refugees immigrating to America. This is not about attacking anyone, simply reaching out to new Americans in need of help. We can at least make sure they have blankets and plates and forks and knives to eat with.
