We had the secondĀ frost of the season last night, the flowers are dying off, the grass is still green, but thinning, it has little nutrition this time of year. This morning, for the first time, we put hay out in the feeders and the animals were eager to get at it, another sign that the grass isn’t filling them up.
Hay time is a big time here, it marks the approach of winter. Sometimes we make it to November, but we would need more rain or warmth for that. The pastures are getting worn down, and we need to cut off access to them to keep them healthy for next year.
