Ed and Carol Gulley pulled up in their farm truck this afternoon with a load of art for this weekend’s Open House and his “Ducky Dynasty” T-shirt. (The Gulley’s will be selling Bejosh Farm Journal T-shirts at the Open House.)
Ed has made a bunch of hot new wooden flowers for lawns and gardens, and a bunch of his now-famed Mr. Blockhead’s and he surprised us with a neat new (and small) turtle, as yet unnamed. We think that one will fly out of here at very un-turtle like speed.
We spread some of Ed’s works out over the lawn, he once called it junk art but we prevailed on him to call it what it is: art. Maybe folk art. Ed is a gifted artist, he re-invents discarded things on his farm – bricks, horseshoes, old wrenches and shovels. All of it authentic farm equipment reborn as art. He has also created a successful and very inventive blog called the Bejosh Farm Journal. It is an instant hit, an honest, funny, visual and very real journal of life on a small family farm. This blog is long overdue.
The artist in Ed, a life-long dairy farmer, wanted to come out, and it is out. Same with his wife Carol, a writer and videographer whose work is also on their blog. Ed is a star pupil in my writing class, he will be speaking at the Open House on Saturday about his art and the realities of a farmer’s life. We are happy to know Ed and Carol, they have becomeĀ valued and good friends.
For those of you who can make it to the Open House, meeting Ed and Carol will be worth the trip – Ed is a born story-teller. For those of you who can’t make it, I will keep you posted. His art is very special, quite unique.
