The vegetation color and topography of the deep woods changes as we walk through it every morning. In some places, no sun reaches he ground, and there is no vegetation. In others, the trees thin and canopy opens and the grass is lush and green. In such places, the deer paths guide us, they seem quite old and well-defined. Sometimes we find coyote scat, sometimes bear scat, sometimes the decaying corpses of dead animals, taken by owls, foxes and coyotes.
We see and feel the cycle of life that nourishes the forest and feeds it and gives birth and rebirth to it. The forest floor is a rich green now where the sun strikes the ground. The dogs follow the deer paths as well as us.
