I do not need an alarm of any kind at Bedlam Farm. As the sun bursts over the hill behind the farmhouse – these days, around 6:45 a.m. – the symphony plays. The horse whinnies, the donkeys bray, the dogs leap up and head for the door, eager to get to work. It is the call to life, the wake-up call.
The animals all have phenomenal hearing. It took us a long time to realize they can hear us talking to one another in bed, we are only about 60 feet away, s tiny distance for any equine. They will yell and scream until we come out and feed them. On a farm, lives revolve around feeding time.
It is a beautiful wake-up call, in it’s own way. It works too, the noise can rattle the windows.
