Foggy Notions is the best place to be on a windy and stormy night, as a much-hyped hurricane steams it’s way up the East Coast. We have seen this movie before. “Is This Another Hurricane Sandy?” asked a story on the Weather Channel. No, said the forecaster with the fake glasses (I guess to make him look nerdy, like a forecaster should look) telling the story.
I took another photo of Kelly, the waiter/bartender/manager several nights a week. Kelly was reading the blog, and she needled me about my struggles to finish writing my book. I asked her what she had done before working at Foggy Notions and she said she had a masters degree in finance and worked for the New York State Assembly for a decade.
Got a bit old, she said, things were more exciting at the bar. This is true. Last time we tried to go there, about 100 bikes were lined up outside, we could not get through the door and every table was filled. You have to handle yourself to run this place, justly rumored to have the best hamburgers for many miles around.
Kelly is one of my favorite portrait subjects, she has the most radiant smile, and is a strong woman. She has never once asked why I want to take her photo, she just smiles the warmest and most natural smile and steps into it.
