Fate has become a meadow jog, a joyous, intrepid explorer of meadows. She loves the tall grass, she takes off in pursuit of mice and chipmunks that she will never catch, she hops and dives through the tall grass, listening for the rustle of snakes, birds and various rodents. She is very happy there, running in circles, diving under fences, ears up, eyes wide, a look of inexpressible joy on her face.
I love the meadows near our house, I love to photograph them, and at first I kept calling her back, afraid she would run off. Then I decided to trust, as I always try to do with my dogs. She always stays close, keeps an eye on us, and comes bursting out of the grass to check in, give us a lick and dive back in. A sweet thing to see, this is a dog who loves every second of life.
Red looks at her in puzzlement, in several years of walking by the meadow, he has never once set foot off the road, he has no interest in chasing chipmunks or mice or birds. Yin and yang, a great pair.
