I have always wanted Bedlam Farm to be a peaceable kingdom, for people, for animals. it has not always been that, life intrudes, stirs the dust, shatters plans. There was Simon’s attack on Rocky, the death of dogs and chickens, vicious roosters, diving hawks, the brutal winter. When Chloe arrived and started chasing the sheep, I wondered if the ethos of the farm would remain intact – all of the creatures here must get along, be treated well, treat one another well.
The Bedlam Farm ethic seeks trust and community, peace and compassion. Animals are not always gentle and compassionate with one another, in the animal world abuse is rampant, and no one is ever re-homed. But I believe that when animals are secure, are treated well, fed and sheltered, they become safe, calm and easy with one another.
We left the sheep in with Chloe and this morning they were out grazing together, Chloe has figured out they are safe and part of the farm. And she is safe and part of the farm. This morning, horses, donkeys, sheep and dogs, together beginning their day. A beautiful kingdom, a peaceable kingdom.
