Why, I wonder, is it so heartwarming and affirming to see the relationship between Fate and Red deepen? Yesterday Red lay down near the sofa and Fate came over and lay down next to him, Red put his head on her back and went to sleep, she closed her eyes and went to sleep also. It touched my heart to see it, I’m not sure why. I think this is something Red needed.

I have seen no signs of any kind of grieving from Red over the loss of Lenore or Frieda, he has gone about his business very much as usual, he took over the dog beds right away, never stopped eating or doing his work. I think people need to think that dogs grieve more than dogs do sometimes.

Yet they are pack animals, they do love tradition and routine, I’m sure he noticed their absence over time, I see he is glad to have another dog around, even a pest like Fate. This is an image of trust and connection, I think this is why it touches me.
