Sarge is a 17-year-old discarded trail horse, totally blind in one eye, almost totally blind in the other. He was pulled out a slaughterhouse auction by Jen Straub (above) of Dorset, Vt. Equine Rescue and taken in this week by Blue Star Equiculture in Palmer, Mass. Maria and I are going to see him Sunday. Blue Star, a wonderful draft horse sancturay and organic farming center, has launched a $12,500 gofundme project to help them take care of Sarge for the rest of his life. He will soon be completely blind.
The money will go to special feed and veterinary care, they will have a specialist come and examine his eyes. There is not much hope that he will be able to see again, but miracles happen all the time. Blue Star is, for me, the best hope for the future of animals in our world. Unlike many people who claim to speak for the rights of animals, Blue Star supports animals and supports the people who live with them as well. They are the future of animals in our world, I believe. They could use some support as well. Blue Star is everything an animal rights movement should be, everything the animal rights movement in America is not these days.
They are St. Francis’s Shelter Of Compassion And Mercy. According to the Bible, this is what Jesus had in mind for the people and animals of the world.
I’m excited to see Sarge, Jen and the others at Dorset Rescue were in tears when Sarge left, they said he was the sweetest and most generous creature. Now, he is learning that human beings can be generous as well. The fund was at $4,350 early Saturday morning, not bad and thanks. we have about $7,000 to go. Every penny that goes to Blue Star goes directly to the animals, not to lobbyists, marketers, bureaucrats and administrators, harassers and demonstrators, angry blogs, fund-raisers, secret informers, publicists or politicians.
There are none of those at Blue Star. If you can help Sarge and Blue Star, that would be great. If not, no pressure. You can read about Sarge and help him here.
I’m off to teach the first session of my short story class at the Hubbard Hall Arts and Education Center. I’m excited. Red is coming along.
