Spring Portrait

I do not have the closest relationship in the world to sheep, although I love working with Red and sheep. I admire their acceptance, durability and gentleness, and sometimes, as with yesterday afternoon, they have a dignity and history about them that is beautiful. They ask for little and give much. Maria sells their wool and I herd them with a dog, something I love doing.

I felt for them this winter, there was nothing for them to do but hole up in the Pole Barn and try to stay warm and out of the wind and snow. They couldn’t do what they are doing above, sitting in the sun and contemplating the world. They are nice looking bunch and gentle with one another. I am glad they are returning to their lives, sitting on dry ground, being warm, contemplating the nature of life. A Spring Portrait. Sooner or later, all of the animals on the farm figure out that it’s good to pose for the big man with the camera. They are all more than I usually give them credit for being.
