When Red is called off the sheep, when his work is done, he has this habit of walking backwards out of the pasture and through the gate, tail wagging, he looks up at me and waits – I realized after awhile – a signal that his work is done. There must have been a command he was given in Ireland (I always say “that’ll do,” and he breaks off contact with the sheep, but then he sits and waits for something else, so now I say “good job, Red,” and that seems to signal him that he can relax, and he turns and runs ahead of me back to the farmhouse.
