Last year, the Cambridge, N.Y., Re-Cycling station was privatized in a cost-cutting move by the county government. Local residents were anxious about what would happen. Mike was appointed the new station manager, and he is widely hailed for his efficiency, intelligence and organization. He runs a right and honest station. He is hyper vigilant, collecting fees ($4.50) per can on his Ipad, he misses nothing, the place is neat as a pin.
The “dump” as we call it, is running more smoothy than ever, helped by his many new signs and directions. I ‘ve been asking to take Mike’s photo for six months, he kept saying no, so I bartered, I gave him a copy of “Second Chance Dog,” and he accepted it and agreed to have his photo taken.
I love Mike’s face, it is a tough and smart face, just like he is.
“I guessed you were famous,” he said. “Why?”I asked, “I don’t know, something about the way you are.”
“What’s the most interesting thing you see around here?”
“I used to see rats, but not anymore.”
What about the stuff that comes in here?”
“I love fishing rods, I collect anything to do with fishing rods.”
