I visited George Forss today at his art gallery – Ginofor – in my town of Cambridge, N.Y., and I was surprised to find these beautiful bookmarks packaged in sets of three on George’s Desk. All three are famous Forss photographs taken in New York City, and they are familiar images done in his brilliant style: The Chrysler Building, The Parachute Jump at Coney Island, the Empire State Building, each captures a feeling and period of one of the great cities of the world.
I asked George what they were I had never seen them before, he said his New York Gallery, Park Slope had made them up some time ago and he sells them in nice plastic sleeves for $1.50. For $1.50?, I said, incredulously. Gum costs twice as much. George looked at me blankly, he is as innocent and unassuming a man as there is. I grabbed a pack and I said I will pay him $3 for one.
This is a quite ingenuous and original stocking stuffer, especially for book lovers or photographers or anyone who appreciates New York City, architecture, majesty, the ingenuity of humans or urban life in America. If you wish to buy any, I suspect George can get them too you for Christmas, but book lovers, of course, can appreciate them at any time. I’m going to hang mine on one of the walls in the farmhouse.
I can’t imagine a more inspiring bookmark.
George is a genius, you can see his original photographs on the site of his gallery, Park Slope in Brooklyn, and if you want to buy these bookmark sets, you can contact George on his blog, he intersperses his wonderful work with running commentary on alien life, God-force and the nature of the universe. He is a very well-organized art dealer, he sells his work very efficiently.
You might consider suggesting a price of $3, or even $5, if you are flush. Along with his photographs, it is a remarkable bargain for Christmas or beyond.
