We have four chickens and apart from Strut, our good-looking and affable rooster, we haven’t named any of them. It’s not a good idea for us to name chickens, things happen to them. Everything on earth wants to eat them, and they are dumber than all of them. We have a good crew of four. None of them are laying eggs at the moment, but that will change in the Spring I think. They are a good lot, industrious, a bit pompous and very methodical. On cold days, they and the barn cats like to cluster outside of the back door, where the sun warms up the slate tiles. I try and chase them off, as they leave reminders of their presence, but I’ve given up on that. They just cluck and grumble at me and come right back.
