Every morning, just after dawn, Red shows up at the office. I open the pasture gate, say, “Red, let’s go to work,” and he goes into the famed border collie crouch, his money pose. He locks eyes with the sheep and they freeze and he waits for me to give him the next command, which is “stay” or “come bye” or “away,” depending on whether I want him to move the sheep or not. He and the sheep know the goal is for them to be at their feeder eating while Red keeps them in place. That is what happens. The pasture is Red’s office. He loves going to work.
