In Naperville: Connection

by Jon Katz

On book tours, writers and bookstores dread talks scheduled against things like presidential
debates and playoff or World Series games, all of which have happened to me. We expected few people in Illinois, the president’s home state and a place where politics is as popular as sports. In Naperville, there was a full house at Anderson’s bookstore, an attentive, intelligent crowd that peppered me with good and interesting questions. A surprise and testament also to the blog, which spreads my story.
A good book tour. As many people come looking for Maria as for me. Today, a new phase. On to four days in California. I am tired, my voice is struggling. I am happy and greatful for the enthusiasm for me, my books and photos, the blog and the stories of my animals Red is a star and so is Simon and Rocky and The New Bedlam Farm.
This afternoon, Maria and I will reunite in the San Francisco Airport and the world will seem right to me.
