Mother teaches me about the great instincts and savvy of cats. Even when she sleeps, it is in a secure place where she is hard to see. She is always looking about her, even when she eats, never unaware of her surroundings. She is always around, but never completely there. She comes and goes, affectionate and savage, attached and independent. Barn cats are mystical, leading lives that are unique in the animal world. They are not interested in being cuddled, being rescued, living in a no-kill world.
I have grown so fond of them, and respectful of them. Mother can take care of herself. And she does.
