Our Sheep. Weekend Plans

by Jon Katz
Our Sheep

The old sheep are gone, but Maria’s wool sheep remain. Red and I are working with them every day to get them used to being herded by dogs. We are getting there. These sheep are going to the New Bedlam Farm. Hannah Elman, one of my editors is visiting from New York. She brought the edited manuscript of my Frieda book – out next year and it is fascinating to see her meet the characters and see the place she had been reading about so intensely for a couple of years.

Frieda was calmer than Hannah expected, and she seems especially drawn to the barn cats and the donkeys. I’ll show her the new farm tomorrow. It is wonderful for me to have an editor who can see my life and the animals I wrote about.  She edited “The Story Of Rose” and helped make it a New York Times bestseller. That is all such a gift to a writer. And she is great fun besides. Tomorrow we’re going over to see Jenna Woginrich’s Cold Antler Farm. Hannah is very interested in sustainable food, one of Jenna’s passions. We won’t get to work on the new farm much this weekend. Saturday afternoon, I have agreed to photograph the wedding of a local banker. He very much wanted me to take these photos. I am not a wedding photographer and couldn’t charge for that, but it is a  creative challenge for me to capture the feeling of a wedding. I’m up for it.

Tomorrow, dinner party. George Forss and Donna Wynbrandt are coming to dinner, and I miss both of them very much when I haven’t seen them for awhile.
