We call it the Donkey Carwash. Every morning, Maria and I get the brushes out, and we brush the donkeys. The donkeys love it. They line up and patiently await their turn. Donkeys, like most domesticated animals, need human attention. Donkeys, unlike dogs, don’t need a lot of it. They get their brushing, their carrot, and then, imperious, they head out to graze. Connecting with animals this way is a beautiful thing, a wonderful way to begin a day. It is healing in many ways.
