Family farms are beset in the rural landscape, choked by government regulation, corporate competition, urban legislators and some animal rights activists. Cows on family farms get to live the best lives of animals anywhere. They get milked twice a day and in between, graze and sun themselves in open pastures, serene and peaceful creatures who soothe the soul. On corporate farms, they live on concrete all of their lives, never eat grass or know the sun, are euthanized when they get sick, and live short lives. Curious and accepting beings, they love to pose for my camera. And I have never met a family farmer that refused me permission to photograph their beautiful souls.
