Healing Up. A Chicken’s Life

by Jon Katz
Healing Up

Fran is healing up, doing well considering the holes in her back from the fox bites. We have three hens who survived a fox attack, thanks to Simon and that’s unusual. Fran still is wobbly walking, and hasn’t yet spread her wings. I’m told these attacks can take up to two months as far as healing goes, but there is also the question of what kind of life Fran will have as a chicken.

I would want her to be able to get up on a roost, get in and out of the barn and move around well. I don’t know what the point is where one gives up on a hen. If you live with Maria, it is a good ways off. I am very comfortable hanging in there with Fran. Maria and I rush out to the barn each morning and compare notes. Is she walking well? Moving her head and eyes? Eating? The other chickens are not bothering here, which is also a good sign. So it is a day by day thing. I think she will survive, but I want to know  more about how, and in what form. That will just take time. Animals teach me patience and love. Always good to learn more about those things.
