Taking notice

by Jon Katz
Who will notice?

I saw the farmer standing next to his barn, shaking his head. I asked him if I could take a photo of it, and he shrugged, and asked: “why?”

I said I thought somebody ought to notice all these barns collapsed all along the road. I doubted many of them would ever be repaired. He nodded. “I can’t fix this one,” he said. “My tractor’s 35 years old.” Well, I said, I thought I ought to record some of them.

He looked at me for a few seconds. “Well,” he said. “You must be crazy, I guess. Nobody is going to notice that my barn is down.”
