The Visual Poem. Technology, Creativity

Technology sometimes seems to be killing the word, as it did the letter. Stories, I think, are blossoming all over the place. And images too.  Digital photography, You Tube, My Space, Ipods and Pads and Phones are spawning millions of filmmakers, capturing the images of life in very new ways.

Maria and I have always had a creative connection, perhaps the core of our relationship. And it grows, and we are using technology to encourage one another to find different ways of being creative, and successful. We both love – within reason – being in the world and staying in the world. She is very disciplined about technology, it does not overwhelm her.Of getting our message out in a time where countless messages are whizzing all around us.

Maria and I move at very different paces and in different ways. And her creativity is, I think, subtle and softer than mine, although it seems that both of us are visual in our story-telling. When Sara Friedman came by and encouraged us to go onto YouTube, and we started shooting videos around the farm, I was drawn to the video as an enhancement of the word, the photo, of my story. She came up with a completely new way – at least to me – of using her Ipod video. She started sketching, and then using video to create what she calls a visual poem – a quiet, reflective way of capturing a scene, in this case a mirror in the Inn where we stayed in Connecticut.

My very crude first videos – much worst than my very first photos – drew more than 2,000 views on YouTube. I have some ideas for using this video, but they are still evolving. I will go take a hundred videos before it clarifies for me. Maria has already created something meditative and graceful I think.
