It’s difficult to sometimes know where so much guilt enters the human-animal bond. I was re-reading Dortothy Burlingham’s classic book on child psychology, “Twins,” in which she discusses the birth of a child’s love for animals, which comes out of loneliness and solitude. “…the two share everything, good and bad experiences, and complete understanding of each other; either speech is not necessary, or they have a secret language; the understanding between them goes beyond the realm of consciousness.”
No wonder we feel so much guilt. Our love of dogs and other animals comes from deep within us.
