What’s in a picture? Lilac leaf, in front of the barn

by Jon Katz

What’s in a picture? Whatever you make of it. When I first started taking photos, in the midst of a painfully severe depression, a well known photographer e-mailed me. He like my photos, he wrote, especially my use of light to illuminate commonplace things. I didn’t really know what he was talking about, but I do now. You can, in fact, take a good photo of anything, if you think about it. This weekend is a big turning point for me, in a number of ways. I finished my novel, “Rose In A Storm” today. I send my second children’s story, “Can Frieda Stay?” off to my editor at Holt.
Tomorrow, I go to the Image Loft in Manchester, Vt. to pick up the dozen or so photos I am taking to the Saratoga Arts Fair in Congress Park on Saturday. Three years ago, when I got serious about taking photos, an artist, Susie, e-mailed me and taught me about centering. Susie, now a good friend, got me to change the way I look at photos. I did not imagine than that photos would be so central to my life, or that I would be taking mine to an art show. I’m not sure yet if I will sell any. Haven’t figured out that part. Mostly, I’ll hang around with Maria and her quilts and read my biography of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
I’m excited though. Maria was laughing at me today, saying the arts fair meant so much more to me than the HBO movie of “A Dog Year” coming out in the Fall. She’s right.
