June 20, 2009 – Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers, including me. Being a father is perhaps the seminal experience of my life. I did my best, but wish I had done more, and done it better. Still, I turned out with an amazing kid, and that is the best Father’s Day gift of all. I expect to get an e-card, if I’m lucky.
I think also of the loss of two children, and wished I had been able to be a father to them, and think of them on this day, and every day.

A friend e-mailed me that she wished to be an artist, and hoped she could find the courage to pursue her dream. She already is an artist, and I wrote back to her that I believe passionately in pursuing dreams and wish that for her. Life is short, time is precious, and the pursuit of dreams is much more important than many of the things we pursue in our culture, and that we worry about. I wish for her and all others like her the gift of encouragement, from her friends, family, and most of all, herself. Go for it.
