Tires in backyards say a lot

by Jon Katz

June 17, 2009 – Warm, cloudy. I spend a lot of time driving around, a staple of country life. Rose got injured again today herding sheep – a hole in her side, I’m not sure how – and is at the hospital again overnight, getting stitched up. The life of the working dog ain’t easy.
I drove to the vet, then to Vermont to pick up two books I ordered, then out to dinner with Maria. About four hours of driving. Whenever I drive around the country, I look for two things – light hitting buildings and tires in backyards. They are deliciously evocative of a lost freedom that speaks of the country – of childhood, and times when children amused themselves without their parents texting them about where they were.
I know of four of these tires. This one was in Rupert, Vt.
