Finding Your Groove: Things Will Happen

by Jon Katz

Lenore knows who she is, and has found her groove

May 22, 2009 – Thomas Merton wrote once that when he says this life is wonderful it doesn’t just mean his vocation – the priesthood. He meant that life is wonderful when you are in the place you are meant to be – for him, where God wanted him to be. That is a marvelous thing. As soon as you get your groove, he wrote, things happen.
I love Merton, and I agree with him. I don’t know where God wants me to be, or if he wants me to be anywhere.
But to say that life is wonderful does not mean it is free of fear, pain or sorrow. Quite the opposite. I have never had a more painful or frightening year. Or a more wonderful one.
Lots of people e-mailing me telling me that I am where they wish to be. It’s flattering, but gives me pause. If it’s true, then they ought to get moving. Time is precious. It’s never good to want somebody else’s life. And noone has the perfect life, surely not me. To me, that would be a shallow existence.
For me, a wonderful life is joy and sorrow, light and dark, gain and loss, change and growth, more change and more growth. Today, I had to face a painful truth about myself, something I had not seen before, or grasped. And it hurt to face that reality.
I returned home to be with someone I love, a beautiful farm, work that is dear to me, writing and photography, new opportunities to be creative, great dogs and good and loyal friends.
I am finding my groove, and it is about time. I wish that it had come at less cost, to me and to others, but that, I gather is the nature of life.
Merton is right, though. As soon as you get set in your groove, boy do things happen.
