May 1, 2009 – The John Clark Dairy Farm has another week or so to go, and I have mixed feelings about it. For John’s sake, I wish it were over. For the sake of the photos, I’m happy to have the chance to go back for another week.
Many people have e-mailed me about this series, and about why it has touched so many people. I never really know why some things do and some don’t. The animals are all going to other farms. Beauty the dog will stay with the family.
There is surely a sense in the country that the individual is being overwhelmed and overrun, even brutalized by bigness – remote government, uncaring corporations, incomprehensible greed and mismanagement. In John Clark and his farm, something is being lost, a way of life, a sense of character and possibility. I feel it too. I am also fortunate to be able to record it.
