The Last Days of A New York State Dairy Farm (1)

by Jon Katz

Beauty the farm dog oversees afternoon milking

There is a small dairy farm near me that is going under – the cows are leaving in two weeks. The family has run the farm for half a century and can no longer handle low milk prices and the rising cost of everything else. The family has graciously permitted me to take photos of the farm’s last days, and I will be posting photos over the next two weeks, until the end of this family’s tradition.
The farm’s owner is devastated, not yet able to talk about the sale of the cows. I hope to get his photo. I’ll be posting daily.
