January 18, 2009 – Warren celebrated his 82nd birthday Saturday, and Izzy and I brought him his favorite meal – steak and french fries. Friends brought some cake and we spent a quiet and comfortable time talking in his home. We didn’t talk about Helen much, mostly politics, local history – one of Warren’s favorite subjects – and his plans for the year. He was, as always, gracious and uncomplaining, but the sorrow is never far from his eyes. It was a nice time.
