Hospice Journal: Back with a vengeance. Hospice program in trouble.

by Jon Katz

Beautiful Marion and Izzy

January 9, 2008 – Izzy and I (and Lenore) took a bit of a break from hospice work after the book tour. I have to concede I was drained a bit, and so was Izzy. We are  recharged and back at it. We will see Marion (above) again on Sunday and have signed up to see two new hospice patients and three existing ones, but various friends not in hospice but who have become attached to Izzy in nursing homes.
My commitment to hospice has deepened, if anything, although there are news reports the Washington County government is considering selling the hospice program to a private hospice organization. This may mean Izzy and Lenore and I can no longer do hospice therapy work here. I understand the county government is under budget pressure, but having seen the county nurses, staffers and social workers for more than a year now, it is troubling to imagine this program disappearing in its current form. I’ll stay focused on it.
