Rose, at work

by Jon Katz

It’s difficult in this photo to convey the difficulty of what Rose is doing. She is moving up a steep and
icy hill, wind and snow blowing in her face. Her task is to give the sheep the eye, to hold them in place, and then to dig them out of the pole barn, which they don’t want to leave, and push them down the hill to the hay feeder, about 30 yards down a sleep slope. She has to be firm, but not push them too fast, or they will slip and fall. She walks up, holds them, then dives into the barn behind them and gets them out, and then walks them down the hill from the rear.
