December 1, 2008 – Cold, clear. I learned this morning that Barb, who Izzy and I visited through much of last year, died on Thanksgiving. I especially enjoyed her ferocious sense of independence, the gentle and compelling stories she told about her youth, and her quiet, dignified empathy.
Like many in hospice, she died the way she wished to die, at home with her family, and in control of the manner in which she left the world. I admire her and will miss seeing her.
Hospice is a powerful idea, in that it allows people to move to the edge of life and beyond with dignity, choice and comfort. I will especially remember Barb and her wonderful stories and gentle way.
