Hospice Journal: Marion, Izzy. Meet Anastasia

by Jon Katz

September 29, 2008 – Had a break in the book tour this afternoon, so we went to see some hospice patients in the nursing home, and also dear Marion. Her son Clayton was there, and he brought her a stuffed bear from Vermont
named “Anastasia.” Marion loves to nurture things, and she loves Anastasia and wanted Izzy to meet her. She told Izzy to lie down on the bed, which he did, and she put Anastasia on his shoulder, and told them to get along.
They did, of course. That’s what Izzy does. He gets along.
I’ll post some more photos of this very sweet encounter later tonight.

Izzy and I will be at Border’s on Broadway in Saratoga Springs at 7 p.m. Thursday, while vice presidential debates rage later that night and stock markets plummet.
Izzy and Marion always offer perspective on a complex world, not a place to hide, but a time to grasp the meaning of life and human connection. That is always grounding.
