The experience of being alive

by Jon Katz

Border collies are a strange breed of dog, a combination of love, energy, smarts and drive. Izzy and Rose are rarely photographed today, as Rose is always on the move, and Izzy always near me. This morning, I caught them both in the garden, and this picture captured their disparate personalities – Rose is edgy, Izzy is soulful.

Joseph Campbell wrote that life itself is without particular meaning. Each person brings the meaning to it. The meaning of life, he wrote, is whatever you ascribe it to be. Being alive is the meaning.
This strikes me as a significant idea. We have the responsibility of defining the meaning in our lives, and of bringing meaning to our lives. Being alive is different from living.
I find that telling stories brings meaning to my life, in words and photos, even hospice work. I believe that without stories, life itself would be without particular meaning for me.
