Last light, dying leaf

by Jon Katz

Leaves are especially interesting to me these days, in part because they are never static, I suppose I admire that, and dread stasis in my own life. Leaves are living, growing and dying all of the time, and you can see it clearly day to day. We are the same way, I guess. When I walk through the woods in the early morning, or in the late afternoon, the sun seems to bore its way through the forest and touch lives, and illuminate the process of dying, at this time of year. Unlike us, leaves get more beautiful as they die, and go out in a blaze of glory.
