Hospice Journal, Izzy and Marion: Trust on the edge of life

by Jon Katz

At the core, I think, hospice work is about trust. You enter the lives of human beings at perhaps the most intimate and meaningful time of life, and it requires trust on both sides, not easy for me, or, I’m sure for many of the people I see.
One of the many things I love about watching Izzy and Marion is the extraordinary trust that flows between them. She loves to feed Izzy, even though she can’t see him well, and Izzy loves taking food from her. I never worry about it, nor does Marion. Izzy takes the food so delicately and gently she can hardly feel it. I love him for that. And I have come to love her, too. How could you not?
