Coming to life (1): Photographer’s Notebook

by Jon Katz

This photo taken with a 1800 mm with extender, aperture f/3.5, shutter speed 1/50

This series is important in my evolution as a photographer, and as an artist,  in that it involved so many elements, and required some experience, equipment and instinct. Also a sense of color and place.
These photos are of a blue vase on the porch. I placed it on the edge of the porch, in the light, and turned the vase so that
the afternoon sun was right behind it, but at an angle, to be indirect, and the yellow flower would be the backdrop rather than the green grass or hills. It had to be out of focus, for the shot to work.
What the shot required was a sense of light and sun, the right ISO and other settings, the right lenses, and a tripod, and a lot of patience, as I was fighting wind, dust, angle, clouds and direct sun. I am getting a good feel for catching the right angle of the sun.
I was happy with the results, although I could have been a little more imaginative about placement, and a bit more patient, and will be next time. I have to also say that while the photographer’s eye is critical, two fairly expensive pieces of glass, helped, two macro lenses in particular. I could not have gotten these shots without them.
Impatience is my enemy, in writing, training dogs, photography and life. When I become more patient, I will be closer to where I want to be as a worthwhile human being.
