Coming to life

by Jon Katz

August 9, 2008 – When my friend Becky pointed out this rainbow, I thought it was trite, and said so. What’s so unusual about a rainbow photo? I asked, and she reminded me that I said the same thing about Callaway Road when I first saw it.
Then I got out of the car and took this photo, I saw it was worth taking, on several levels. Why, she asked me, did I think it was trite? I don’t know, I said, perhaps because I feel I am coming to life, and beginning to open myself up to parts of the world that I didn’t see, or thought were trite. One thing I love about living in the country, you come face to face with beauty and power all the time, and you can see it or not see it. I suppose this is why people become artists, because they want to see it.
Things I once thought were trite, are not quite interesting to me, and my notions about what’s interesting are evolving very rapidly. I hope they keep evolving.
Taking pictures helps, because you have to look at the world differently. I hope this shows up in my writing as well. Stasis has always been one of my greatest fears. I seem to be avoiding that.
Sometimes I feel as if I am just coming to life.
