Wildflowers, after the storm

by Jon Katz

June 25, 2008 – Raining, cloudy. Hung some photos in my office, which is nice. Hoping to write, have meetings this afternoon. I think I’m going to incorporate the Lenore and Brutus story into a forthcoming book, Barnyard Tales, which will explore the animals relationships with one another. I remember Orson and Winston Sr. hanging out together, and Winston Sr. and Minnie, the barn cat. Some animals have an ability to connect with animals of a different species. I am also struck by the intense loyalty of the donkeys to one another, and the very loving relationship between Elvis and Luna. Animals have emotional lives, but not human emotions, so the trick is to describe their behaviors without casting them too specifically in human terms. It’s tricky, but it will be a great challenge in the writing.
