Rose on duty: Number 74 and Dr. Kirk Ayling of the Granville, N.Y. Large Animal Service

by Jon Katz

Number 74, just before she was given an injection and died quickly and peacefully. She was struggling.

Dr. Kirk Ayling examined Number 74, who was wheezing heavily and said she had somehow severely damaged her treachea and was struggling to breathe. This is a puzzle, as it’s hard to imagine how this might have happened, one of those farm mysteries. Kirk is a pleasure to deal with, killing any animal is discouraging to him.
Below, Rose and I took Number 74 up in the woods, and I always want Rose to see any death or change, so she can keep track of the place in her head, which she does. If an animal dies or leaves and she doesn’t see it, she looks for it for days. Rose went up to Number 74’s body, and sniffed it, her way of marking the moment. Rose was present for the injection which killed Number 74 as well.

If an animal of any kind disappears from the farm and Rose doesn’t see it go, she looks for it for days, even weeks, so Rose is always present whan an animal is put down, or buried, or leaves. Above, Rose watching Number 74’s resting place, far out in the woods.
