Welcome to June: Hospice Journal next Sunday at Gardenworks, Salem, N.Y.

by Jon Katz

June 1, 2008 – Welcome to June, and it is as chilly as dry. We need rain, as farmers like to say. Next Sunday, you are invited to Gardenworks, Salem, N.Y., (518 854 – 3250) at 2 p.m. for the first showing of photos from the Hospice Journal, and talks about Hospice and my work with Izzy and Lenore as Hospice Therapy dogs.
In addition, Mary Kellogg will read from her new book “My Place on Earth,” a collection of poetry (she will also be reading next Saturday afternoon at the Battenkill Book Shop in Cambridge, N.Y.- we hope to have books by then, and Maria Heinrich will be showing and selling some of her quilts, including the Mother (the barn cat) quilt, inspired by the poem “Ode to The Cat” by Pablo Neruda, which Maria reads to Mother in her studio all the time. The text of the poem is embedded in the quilt. (You can buy it by e-mailing Maria at [email protected], some proceeds to Hospice.)
Izzy and Lenore will be at Gardenworks, and so will all the great stuff Gardenworks has and sells – gourmet cheese, flowers, farm produce, muffins and pies. I will talk about the work of a Hospice volunteer and my next book, “Izzy and Lenore: Two Dogs, An Unexpected Journey, and Me,” which is partly about the Hospice work Izzy led me to this year. Hospice officials will also talk about Hospice, and how it works. Come if you can. We probably will not be selling most of the Hospice Journal photos.
