Potato man, Argyle, N.Y. Fire and Rescue chicken barbecue

by Jon Katz

May 30, 2008 – I am making an effort to get to as many local functions as I get, to take photos and see more of life around here, and you see it at this dinners and barbecues, the way local groups raise money. I love the faces I see, and was pleased with these photos, although they would have been better of Steve McLean, the hound from heaven, didn’t rush me out to his house with our chicken dinners. Don’t rush the artist, I whined, but he didn’t care.
Steve’s appetite is a fierce as his faith, and you not want to be sitting anywhere near him when barbecued potato chips are served. He was eager to get home and eat, which we did. We had a sweet time, me, Steve, his wife Kim and Mongo the spiritual dog. Whenever I don’t bring the camera, I regret it as the afternoon light hit Mongo on the head and it was beautiful. I am fond of the town of Argyle. It is filled with farmers and farm families and the people are open, honest and welcoming.
We talked about technology, spirituality and people’s feelings about work. I’m badgering Steve to go sheepherding with me. I signed up to work the Argyle Fire Rescue kitchen rotation at the Washington County Fair in exchange for getting to take photos of the kitchen crew at work.
