Resentment quilt: One sale toda

by Jon Katz

Jesus does not resent Maria’s quilt, he wants to eat it

May 10, 2008 – Maria is on fire, cranking out one beautiful quilt after another, now that she has rearranged her schedule to work more regularly in the studio barn. Maria woke up in the middle of the night, feeling resentful, as she put it (it happens in the daylight also) and she had this idea for the quilt, and rushed to begin putting it together.
I told her we shouldn’t just photograph these beautiful things lying on the floor, but mull the setting, so we ran all over the farm trying out one spot, then the other. I like this shot because it brings the donkeys into it in an unlikely setting, although the ones below show the quilt even better. We ended up hanging it out of the big barn, to keep Jesus from eating it.
Maria does beautiful work, and so far her quilts have sold quite quickly. I don’t know exactly what she is charging for this one, I think around $400, but you can ask her at [email protected]. She usually ignores my marketing and other advice, but she was in a good mood this morning and agreed that we ought to think about where we should put it. Now that I am getting more serious about photography, I am also getting to be a bigger pain-in-the-ass about simply pointing and shooting. Have to think about lighting and all and drag all this junk around, make a big thing out of it, like some Hollywood director. It works though.
I said if we continue to present the quilts well, they will continue to sell. Portion of the proceeds goes to Hospice.
Maria is making a quilt for Paula, who believes, along with others, that she is seriously undercharging. Paula also wants to buy one at the lower rates, as long as the undercharging is happening. She is a coupon clipper, relishing a bargain.
