Beauty in small things, dept. Moss (1)

by Jon Katz

April 15, 2008 – A good example of why I love photography, and what I can learn from it. One, there is beauty in small things. Two, God may, in fact, be everywhere. Three, I have no choice but to take a closer look at the world. Four, photography is an intellectual experience, much like chess. It’s not a matter of taking a picture. It’s a matter of thinking through what you want, how you see it, and then having the means to do it, in this case, an 85 mm portrait lens, which helped to clarify the foreground, and soften the background, which was a stone wall. Last week, I never noticed moss (Paula suggested shooting it), and today, I took a very ordinary shot of moss on rocks, and didn’t really like it.
I kept thinking about it, and then Annie suggested the moss in the back of the house on a stone wall, and I hauled out Lenore (my muse) and a tripod and several lenses and got closer and closer and played and played until it seemed to work.
I am happy about this experience, and will be back at it tomorrow.
