Appreciating Joe

by Jon Katz

April 2, 2008 – For each of the years I’ve been living in bedlam, I’ve shared my life, with dogs and beyond, with Joe Donahue, anchor at WAMC and co-host of “Dog Talk,” which he and I do monthly. I always bring a dog, usually Izzy, sometimes Lenore, and I love listening to Joe work ideas and issues through.
It is always a pleasure to see this gracious, intelligent and thoughtful man, well worth the drive into Albany and back.We see some things differently, but not any of the essentials. Lenore has a big heart to go with his significant brain (not much fashion sense though, unlike me) and working with him is a pleasure and a privilege. He is respectful of every caller. And some of them are a bit strange.
Today our broadcast was on the issue of whether dogs and other animals have souls, something I’m writing a book about, and a subject close to my heart. Joe is a great radio presence and a valued pal. He sometimes seems too nice to work in media, but that’s probably just a front.
